A Radical Approach to Learning Behind Bars
Level’s innovative model delivers essential, in-demand education and job training directly into prisons. Their unique educational curriculum currently reaches people in 151 Texas prisons and jails and over 1,000 correctional facilities nationwide – many of which do not provide educational opportunities.
Level specializes in reaching everyone, even those cut off from traditional programming. This includes people in facilities with no existing education options, as well as individuals in administrative segregation, high-security, and solitary confinement units – places where learning opportunities are virtually non-existent.
Unlike typical classroom settings, Level’s curriculum utilizes a low-cost correspondence format. This innovative model maximizes reach while minimizing barriers, important features in the prison system where barriers are typically high and access low. Learners receive printed educational and job training modules – each is designed as a roughly 10-hour study program on a specific topic. Once they complete a module, they send quiz answers and completion information back to Level to earn a certificate and receive their next lesson.
Level's content library is strategically curated to equip learners with skills that are immediately relevant to post-incarceration success and financial stability. These offerings include Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy, Computer Science and Meditation
Level makes it seamless for family members and supporters on the outside to give the gift of education. There are no waiting lists or restrictions, making it a great way to foster connection while proactively preparing for a brighter future.
The process is simple:
·One-Time Enrollment Fee: A single fee covers the cost of printing and shipping the educational materials and grants families access to real-time progress updates.
·Simple Enrollment Process: Locate a person’s prison location on Level’s website and fill out the form. You can consult with Level's staff if you have any questions.
Transparent Communication: Level ships the first module within 1-3 business days. Families receive automated text messages or emails when new content is shipped and when a certificate is earned. Supporters can also log into Level’s site to check on the learner’s progress. These updates help create connections and break the isolation of incarceration.
Level’s founders, Alex Wright and Kate Mullan, bring a decade of experience in prison education to the table. Their organization is built on a core vision: a world where people in prison can build brighter futures through transformative education. Their philosophy is simple – put people first, ensure access for all, and build community to actively fight the isolation of incarceration.
