Texas Housing Conservancy
Sooch Foundation seeks to make a positive and permanent change in the lives of economically disadvantaged people in Austin through increased educational opportunities. We fund programs that support post-secondary educational success, workforce skills development, and dual-generation learning. We know, however, that it is nearly impossible for individuals to succeed in these opportunities if they do not have the basic stability that housing provides. Affordable housing is a necessary ingredient for the economic mobility we hope to support.
The Texas Housing Conservancy (TxHC) was formed in 2016 by a group of experienced Austin real estate, finance and affordable housing professionals to ensure that the Texas workforce can afford housing by building a social impact fund to create and preserve well located multi-family apartment properties for long-term affordability, as well as provide programs to build community and improve resident outcomes.
Since inception, Texas Housing Conservancy has increased its portfolio to over $661 million in 17 properties, totaling 2,882 units and serving over 4,000 residents. Many properties have programming that supports the broader success of their residents. For example, TxHC has partnered with both Broadway Bank and Texas Capital Bank to provide financial literacy and coaching. The program is designed to empower residents with the financial knowledge and support they need to thrive.
TxHC has been recognized widely for its work, most recently with the TAIA Charity Partner of the Year Award. “This prestigious recognition underscores our dedication to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve,” according to CEO Monica Medina.
Austin is a great city, but one of its greatest challenges is the availability of housing across many income levels. We are pleased to partner with organizations like TxHC, Foundation Communities, LIfeWorks and American YouthWorks, who contribute to the creation and sustainability of affordable housing in Austin so that all of our neighbors can thrive.
