Empowering Student Parents: How Austin Community College and Community Partners Drive Generational Change

The Sooch Foundation’s mission is rooted in a fundamental belief: education is the most effective tool to create positive, permanent change in the lives of economically disadvantaged individuals in Central Texas. By increasing access to educational opportunities that lead to better jobs, family-sustaining wages, and essential life skills, we can uplift entire families and strengthen our regional economy. In Central Texas, one of the most powerful levers for achieving this systemic change is investing in student parents pursuing higher education. Through intentional, holistic support models and strategic community collaboration, Austin Community College District ( ACC) is leading the way in ensuring that parenting students are equipped to succeed academically and thrive in the workplace.

Across higher education, student parents represent a significant yet frequently overlooked portion of the student body. Nationally, 1 in 5 undergraduate college students is raising a child. Despite their immense determination to build better futures for their families, these students face extraordinary headwinds that make completing a degree uniquely challenging.

Parenting students must navigate the complex balance of rigorous coursework, jobs, and parenting responsibilities, often while managing tight household budgets. Consequently, parenting students are 10 times less likely to graduate than their non-parent peers. The barriers are even steeper for young parents: fewer than 2% of teen mothers who have a baby before age 18 earn a college degree before age 30. Without dedicated support systems designed to address both immediate financial pressures and ongoing family needs, these structural obstacles can perpetuate cycles of economic hardship across generations.

Recognizing that supporting parenting students creates a vital ripple effect for families across Austin, Austin Community College has embedded support for parenting students into its institutional ecosystem. ACC offers a comprehensive suite of resources aimed at removing barriers to persistence and degree completion.

Through dedicated Resources for Parents & Families, ACC connects our parenting students to critical campus and community support networks. To relieve the significant burden of early childhood care, ACC provides specialized Child Care support and resources, enabling parents to attend classes and focus on their studies with confidence. Financial security is further bolstered through philanthropic support and initiatives such as the ACC Free Tuition program, Affordability Scholarships, and the Student Emergency Fund, which offers crucial safety-net assistance when unexpected financial crises arise.

ACC's Riverbat Bites Food Pantries, located across 11 campuses, provide students and their families with free access to nutritious food, fresh produce, and essential household supplies, helping alleviate food insecurity and stretch limited household budgets.

Beyond financial and logistical aid, ACC surrounds parenting students with holistic care, including Mental Health Counseling, Academic Coaching, and individualized Advising to ensure they receive personal and academic guidance every step of the way.

Unlocking long-term economic mobility requires connecting educational achievement directly to career placement and wage growth. ACC’s impact is multiplied through deep partnerships with Central Texas community organizations that share a commitment to two-generation support and workforce alignment.

A prime example is ACC’s long-standing partnership with Capital IDEA, an organization dedicated to moving non-traditional students from college coursework into high-demand careers. Capital IDEA provides eligible students with 100% covered tuition, textbooks, and fees, paired with vital childcare assistance and personal Career Navigators who offer continuous mentorship. This comprehensive sponsorship guides students through associate degree programs at ACC and directly into high-paying fields such as nursing, information technology, and applied technologies. Similarly, two-generation community models like the Jeremiah Program align with this vision by wrapping both parent and child in career, housing, and early childhood support. By addressing the needs of the whole family, these collaborative frameworks break down traditional barriers to post-secondary completion and sustainable workforce engagement.

When we support parenting students, the return-on-investment spans generations. A mother or father earning a college degree not only secures higher wages and financial stability for their household but also models resilience and educational achievement for their children. At the Sooch Foundation, we are proud to champion initiatives that create clear pathways from education to economic security. By fostering strong partnerships between higher education institutions like ACC and dedicated community organizations, Central Texas can ensure every parenting student has the resources to graduate, launch a fulfilling career, and build a brighter future
